Earliest meeting: Thursday 13th April 1843 Final meeting: Thursday 13th April 1843 The Hetfordshire town of Bushey, in the Hertsmere borough of the county, was mentioned in the Domesday Book when referred to as Bissei. However, there is evidence that the settlement dates back well before 1086, possibly as far back as the Stone Age. Today the town has a population in excess of 24,000, but it was much smaller in the mid-1800s when it organised its sole race meeting. A sweepstake event was held on Thursday 13th April 1843 on the edge of Bushey Heath which was won by Mr George’s Dick Swiveller after a keenly fought battle with Nonpareil. |
